Percutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation (PTNS)
PTNS is a non-surgical, outpatient therapy commonly used to help manage overactive bladder and related urinary symptoms, under provider direction.
What Is PTNS?
Percutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation (PTNS) is a therapy that delivers mild electrical stimulation to the tibial nerve near the ankle. This nerve shares pathways with the nerves that influence bladder function.
Over time, this stimulation may help retrain communication between the bladder and the brain, supporting improved symptom control.
How the Treatment Works
During a PTNS session, a very thin needle electrode is placed just above the ankle. A small external device delivers gentle electrical pulses through the tibial nerve.
Sessions typically last about 30 minutes. Most individuals remain seated comfortably and are able to relax during treatment.
Typical Treatment Course
- One session per week for approximately 12 weeks
- Symptom review after the initial treatment series
- Maintenance sessions every 3–6 weeks, as recommended by the provider
Treatment schedules and outcomes vary based on individual needs and provider guidance.
